Aggression as an Overrated Concept
by Gary Carson
|
Playing aggressively isn't really an overrated concept, but I decided to put a discussion of overaggressive play in this chapter just because it seems to fit as a common mistake. Aggression in poker, and especially Hold 'Em, is generally a good thing. Betting and raising will win much more money over time then calling - but it can be over done.
Over aggression
Raising to get information
A lot of players will raise with mediocre hands to "define the hand." To attempt to get information about the strength of your hand. The cost of doing this is almost always greater than the value of any information you might get.
Raising to intimidate
Many players will try to bully their way into winning a pot. They raise because they think you're weak and can be intimidated into folding.
